Publisher joins the Carbon Balanced Paper project

Grafkom has made a deal with Swedish publisher Bookmark Förlag concerning carbon offseting of more than 700,000 books in 2022. The carbon offsetting is carried out through the Carbon Balanced Paper project, which is handled by Grafkom in the Nordics.

“To get a large publisher as Bookmark on-board is of course very positive for the project,” says Magnus Thorkildsen of Grafkom. Grafkom is helping companies along the entire value chain of print with carbon compensation through the project Carbon Balanced Paper. The compensation is done by the international recognized organization World Land Trust, an organization that is specializing in rain forest protection.

“We believe and hope that even more players in our industry will follow Bookmark and put sustainability on top of their priority list,” says Thorkildsen.

By compensating through the Carbon Balanced Paper scheme, Bookmark is protecting vulnerable rain forests in Vietnam, Ecuador and Mexico. The protection of rain forests has the effect that carbon stored in trees are not released into the atmosphere. In addition, rain forest protection is an important contributor to save several threatened animals, Bookmark states in a press release.

“Climate and sustainability is something that effects everyone, from consumer to producer,” says Claes Ericson, CEO of Bookmark Förlag. We are all a part of the problem, we therefore have to try to be a part of the solution. We are also in dialogue with printers and other partners to reduce the environmental impact of our products as much as possible, adds Ericson.

2022 is the fourth consecutive year that Bookmark is compensating for the company’s entire emissions.
